For times like these, when we are between new plays and new trends, we are focusing this workshop on providing current research, data sources, service-provider insights, and knowledge gained by Michigan industry members themselves. Our goal is to provide some information and inspiration to develop projects or techniques that combine lower risk and shorter term returns.
8:15-8:50—Registration and breakfast
9:10-9:40—Peter Voice, Faculty Teaching Specialist and MGRRE Research Associate, will describe the lithofacies of the Trenton-Black River Formations in Albion-Scipio and related fields. He will discuss the linkage between primary depositional fabric and diagenetic overprints. Lithofacies with good primary permeability and porosity are conduits for dolomitizing fluids that can enhance the permeability of these rocks. Selected cores will be highlighted at this presentation and the core workshop. Peter received his PhD from Virginia Tech in 2010 and has worked on Michigan Basin projects for more than ten years.
9:40-10:05—William B. Harrison, MGRRE Director, and Jennifer L. Trout, MGRRE geologist, will present a summary of original oil in place (OOIP) estimates for selected leases of Trenton-Black River wells from the Albion-Scipio Field in order to determine possible candidates for secondary recovery. Volumetric estimates of OOIP can be made for lease tracts since there is uniform well spacing of 20 acres per well. Pay thickness can be estimated from wireline logs and is controlled by presence of diagenetic dolomite and position of original oil/water contact. Porosity can be approximated from nearby core analyses and qualitatively matched to old neutron logs. Core porosity may, however, underestimate reservoir pore volume because of vuggy and cavernous porosity not sampled in cores. Water saturation and formation volume factor can be approximated from published information. OOIP calculated in this manner will probably underestimate true pore volume. Comparison of estimated OOIP with known lease production statistics may be a useful screen for secondary or enhanced oil recovery targets. Bill received his PhD from the University of Cincinnati, founded the MGRRE/Core Lab in 1982, and has authored dozens of papers on Michigan geology. Jenny received her BS and MS degrees in geology from Western Michigan University and has organized collections and carried out research at MGRRE since 2012.
10:05—10:40—Jim Schramski, Professional Engineer and Vice President of Operations at Riverside Energy Michigan, will detail several case studies of recent Antrim production facility consolidations executed to reduce operating costs and extend the life of the reserves. Jim earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1997 and has performed reservoir, production and facilities engineering roles in the Antrim and New Albany Shales.
10:40-11:10—Break, and time for visiting MOGA’s 18th Annual Petroleum Conference booths
11:10-11:20—Neeraj Gupta, Ph.D., Battelle Senior Research Leader, and Principal Investigator for a new project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, titled “Chemically Enabled CO2-EOR in Multi-Porosity, Hydrothermally Altered Carbonates in the Southern Michigan Basin.” This research focuses on the Trenton/Black River plays and addresses development of new EOR methodologies, tools, and processes. In this endeavor, Battelle is working with industry partners Innova Exploration, Inc., and West Bay Exploration Company, and with university partner Western Michigan University.
11:20-11:50—Dennis Schmude, geologist and president of Schmude Oil, will discuss the discovery of the South Evart oil field in Osceola County. He will present the challenges his team faced in locating and producing the field’s development. Out of those challenges new ideas developed in seismic processing and how to produce these oil wells, as well as a new well in Mecosta County. Two of the 3 wells can produce >1000 BO/D, but they are self-curtailed to 40-55 BO/D with no water since January 2018. Denny received his BS degree in Geology from Wayne State University in 1970 and has been working in the Michigan Basin for 50 years.
11:50-12:05—Dennis Schmude receives MGRRE’s 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award
12:00 Lunch is served and at 12:30—Our lunch speaker, Adam Wygant, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy—Oil, Gas, and Minerals Division Director, will give current information on programmatic changes including important updates on primacy and enhanced oil production trends. Adam graduated from Grand Valley State University, attended graduate school at Bowling Green State University, and has worked as a geologist in Michigan for 25 years.
1:15-1:30—Natalia Zakharova, Assistant Professor of Applied Geophysics at Central Michigan University, will introduce a new cross-disciplinary research project in the Antrim shale focused on elucidating the influence of immature organic matter on porosity and mechanical properties of biogenic gas shales. Natalia received her MS and BS from Moscow State University (Russia) in 2004 and 2006, respectively, and a PhD from Columbia University (New York) in 2014.
1:30-2:00—Kevin Watts, Director of Oil and Gas Business Development at the Linde Group, will discuss using CO2 to increase oil and gas recovery in legacy oil fields and to increase gas production from marginal shale gas wells. This has a great deal of importance to the Antrim Shale operators in Michigan. Kevin operated Niagaran Reef and Traverse Lime production in Michigan during the 1990’s. He completed his undergraduate work in 1977 at Ball State University and his MS degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Wyoming in 1979.
2:00-2:30—Matthew Rine, Geologist, Consumers Energy, will present his recent work related to better understanding the timing and distribution of salt plugging associated with Niagaran Reef reservoirs in Michigan. The presentation will include examples of northern and southern trend reefs and discuss strategies for both predicting and identifying the extent of salt plugging as it relates to future exploration techniques. Matt received his PhD from WMU in the spring of 2019, in which he focused on Niagara-lower Salina reef complexes in Michigan and has three years of gas storage experience at Consumers Energy.
2:45-3:25—Nelson Fairchild, Professional Petroleum Engineer at Encompass Oil & Gas Consulting, and Jessica Kane, GIS Developer at Line 45, LLC, will present no-cost options using data and software to make decisions and reveal the right deals and increase profits. They will walk through a production data analysis workflow, showing where to find the data and how to visualize it in free and open source GIS/mapping software. Nelson has over 30 years of experience in reservoir analysis and has built numerous tools using Microsoft Excel and Access that process and analyze freely available oil and gas data. Jessica holds a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in GIS and web map programming. She specializes in both ArcGIS and open source technology.
3:25-3:55—Fransiska Goenawan, Geoscientist with Halliburton, will discuss Halliburton’s newest through-tubing Pulse Neutron – Carbon/Oxygen logging system, designed for use in mature fields. Created to increase production and save costs, the system can help identify bypassed reserves, determine formation fluid contacts, identify lithologies and mineralogies, and provide porosity information within the completion interval. The system is also widely used for time-lapse reservoir monitoring in EOR surveillance. Siska received her MS from Bandung Institute of Technology, has worked in the oil and gas industry since 2004, and is a member of Halliburton’s formation evaluation and reservoir solution team in Houston.

Mohammed Al Musawi, WMU Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences PhD student, will present “Chronostratigraphic Correlation of the Burnt Bluff Group across the Michigan Basin”.
Joseph McGuire, WMU Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences MS student, will present his reservoir analysis of the Trenton-Black River Formation.
Kouqi Liu, CMU Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department postdoctoral fellow, will present “Pore structure of the Antrim shale: Preliminary results from gas adsorption and mercury intrusion analyses.”
Adedoyin Adeyilola, CMU Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department PhD student will present “Integrated characterization of the Antrim shale: Preliminary results from petrography, porosity and organic matter analyses.”
