In its 5th year, the 5k Color Tour – Fighting Cancer One Color at a Time, brought together over 355 participants and volunteers who, with the help of the community, raised above and beyond their $25,000 goal! This year, NuEnergy Operating was joined by over 20 other sponsors, including Line 45, Maverick Oilfield Supply, and Yohe Services, LLC.
Since 2014 the 5K Color Tour, has generated and donated all race proceeds to various cancer related associations to help with the fight against cancer. In its first two years, proceeds from the race were donated to the American Cancer Society through NuEnergy Operating’s Otsego County Relay for Life team. In 2016, its third year, the NuEnergy team wanted to shift the focus more local to strictly help residents battling cancer in Otsego County. MOGA Board Member and NuEnergy Operating President, Jeff Smetzer, along with his wonderful staff, helped create the T.A.C.K.L.E fund (Together against Cancer, Kept Local Everyday) an Otsego County United Way committee to raise funds for local residents affected by cancer. With the help of McLaren Northern Michigan, and the T.A.C.K.L.E. Fund, the group purchased new medical transport van to assure that Otsego County residents had safe and reliable transportation to their needed cancer treatments. At last year’s Color Tour, attendees were able to see this van that they helped raise money for. The fourth-year’s race proceeds stayed at the United Way to help with operating costs to run the transport van, assist with financial burden that residents face during treatments, help with lodging and gas cards for treatments outside of Otsego County, and a portion was donated to the Oncology department at the Otsego Memorial Hospital.
This year, the T.A.C.K.L.E. Committee teamed up with the Otsego Community Foundation to create an endowment fund to help grow the T.A.C.K.L.E. Fund even more, and to keep programs such as the medical transport van running, for years to come.
