EGLE Names Mike Neller Director of Remediation and Redevelopment Division

In a Press Release late last month, EGLE announced Mike Neller will be the new Director of the Department's Remediation and Redevelopment Division

According to the Press Release, Neller, a U.S. Navy veteran who was hired into EGLE in 2018 as manager of the Radiological Protection Section, assumes his new role Dec. 1.

EGLE Director Liesl Clark said Neller’s extensive leadership experience is a strong match for the 280-employee division as its environmental and redevelopment challenges expand in scope and complexity.

“Addressing Michigan’s contaminated properties in a timely and effective manner is critical to the health of our communities. Mike’s managerial skills will help ensure RRD remains successful,” Clark said. “I am excited about Mike starting his new role in the department. He understands the dual nature of our work — simultaneously addressing challenges and seizing opportunities.”

Neller is an East Lansing, Michigan, native. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and spent 25 years as a nuclear submarine officer. After retiring from the Navy, Neller worked in manufacturing operations at a solar panel company and served as dean of students at a private boarding school in Indiana.

“I am very excited about this new position and the opportunity to serve with all the members of RRD and the important work they do,” Neller said.

RRD works with the owners of contaminated properties throughout Michigan. The division oversees publicly funded cleanups, provides technical assistance and financial incentives to private parties and the public to assess, reduce or eliminate human and environmental risks at contaminated properties. It facilitates the redevelopment of properties to increase economic vitality, reduce urban sprawl and provide safe areas for people to live, work and play. It also tracks radiological waste from Michigan facilities.

Programs within RRD include Environmental Remediation, Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Superfund, Laboratory Services and Brownfield Redevelopment
