Major General Retired Gregory J. Vadnais

Major General Gregory J. Vadnais retired in January of 2019 as The Adjutant General and the Director of Military and Veterans Affairs for Michigan.  Appointed in January of 2011, General Vadnais has commanded and directed the 159 units and the 11,000 superb Soldiers and Airmen of our Michigan Army and Air National Guard.

Major General Vadnais’ military career began in 1970 on his enlistment as a Soldier in the 107th Maintenance Battalion, Michigan Army National Guard.  In 1973 he was selected for leadership training and was commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant of Field Artillery on completion of the Michigan Military Academy Officer Candidate School.  His many notable career duty assignments include Commander of the 1st Battalion, 119th Field Artillery Regiment, Commander of the 1st Battalion, 182d Field Artillery Regiment, Commander of the 46th Infantry Brigade, 38th Infantry Division (Mechanized).  His General Officer assignments include service as the Assistant Division Commander for Maneuver, and as the Commanding General for the 38th Infantry Division (Mechanized), one of the 8 National Guard Divisions in the country, and the Commander for the Joint Task Force Cyclone in response to Hurricane Katrina where he provided command and control of the over 14,000 Soldiers and Airman deployed to Mississippi. The 38th Infantry Division trained and deployed over 9,000 soldiers to 17 different countries in 54 different locations during his command.

General Vadnais has served the Nation and the State for more than 44 years, and throughout that time, has commanded units and Soldiers an unprecedented 23 years at every level in the Army National Guard.  Under General Vadnais’s leadership Michigan State Partnership Programs with the nations of Latvia and Liberia have grown to be recognized as two of most premier and effective programs conducted by the National Guard States across the Nation.  His personal commitment and engagement with Presidents, Ambassadors, and defense officials of both countries have built a leadership of trust based on performance and have been recognized as critical elements of regional engagement efforts by both US European Command and US Africa Command.

In his civilian career, he was a partner in Paxton Resources, LLC, an oil and gas exploration and production company based out of Gaylord, Michigan.  He is married to his wife, Leanne, and they reside in East Lansing, Michigan.  They have two children and four grandchildren.
